Problem with CR 4042 radio/cassette

Can anyone advise me about a problem I have with the radio cassette player Volvo CR 4042 (original Volvo issue) on my 1988 240 GLT estate? Both radio and cassette player sound fine BUT, when I switch off, the radio sound does switch off but the cassette player goes on running (without sound) if there is a cassette in it, and the light stays on -- until I switch off the ignition when the casssette player goes off too. In other words, so long as the ignition is switch on, it is only possible to switch off the sound of the radio cassette player. Any ideas? Thanks in anticipation, Eric

I have a similar problem with my 1992 240SE in that sometimes I lose the sound as I'm driving along although the cassette is still playing. I think mine is down to a loose connection somewhere, but I've had the stereo and all speakers out and it all seems OK. Most stereos are wired to come on and off with the ignition, so unless sound is somehow switched independantly (something I've never come across before) you should not be able to operate it independantly. With mine I'm beginning to suspect some sort of short/loose connection in the stereo itself, this may be similar with yours but causing the opposite problem.

Hi Justin, It sounds like we ought to swop radios -- except that might give us the other person's problem as well as our own! Like you, I could see nothing wrong with the wiring. So, again like you, I wondered if the fault was within the radio itself. So I replaced it with another radio of the same type from our local car breakers. But to no good effect -- that one behaves in exactly the same way! Cheers, Derek
