Cambelt of chain?

MessageAuthor

First of all Hi - my first post on this site. I've just bought an S80 D5 SE Lux Auto 05 plate (85k miles) and the dealer mentioned that the engine was chain rather than belt. Since I am new to all of this I do not know the engine number. Which one is it and when should it be changed?

Hello, I've got the V70 with the 163hp d5 engine on a 55 plate and this is fitted with a timing belt, i presume this would be the same engine as fitted to yours. As for renewal i think thr recommended interval is around 90,000 miles. If i'm wrong i think somebody on this forum will correct me, they are an helpfull bunch of people. Dunc,

Volvo don't generally use chains, only the V8 currently has them. The D5 is always a belt and always has been. Find another dealer! I would also consider doing the timing belt change early. Although the belts don't generally snap early on their own, some D5s have had the tensioner pulley seize, resulting in a snapped belt and a broken engine. When replacing the belt, they should also replace the tensioner too. Might as well get yours done now, eh?

Thanks for the responses. It was an independant dealer. Fortunately I managed to buy my S80 for a good price. I will have to use some of the discount for the timing belt change. Cheers.

The new 3.2L I6 (si6 or short inline 6-cyl) also has a timing chain.
