Hard wiring a TomTom

MessageAuthor

Is there an auxiliary power supply available behind the dash to do the above on a V70? On my 850 I spliced into the cigarette lighter wires. I could do that again but I'm just looking for a neater solution. Thanks

If I remember correctly, there are two accessory power supplies behind the nearside of the dashboard on the V70, one is for a mobile phone, if it was'nt so wet out there I would get the handbook out of the care to confirm, I will check in the morning. kev240

Hi What I have done to get round this problem is plug in a 3 way adaptor in the rear lighter then thread this into the centre console from that I have plugged in my fridge that is in the boot, a second phone charger for my own phone(Nokia phone kit up front for work phone) and then got an extension wire from the 3 way adaptor to the o/s/f where I have plugged in my TOM TOM threading the wire up the A post trim. This looks very neat and no wires on show! :Banane32:

I need to do the same job and have investigated splicing into the wires on the rear ciggy lighter socket. Much easier than taking the centre console apart.

RE: Hard wiring a TomTom

I hard wired an INFORAD camera locator into mine last year by finding a switched live on the fuse board in the side panel by the driver's door and splicing into that with a scotchlok connector, then running the cable up behind the dash and out in the corner of the screen pillar on the driver's side. It's worked well for me and it's very neat. The fuse panel unclips quite easily to allow access to the rear. To make doubly sure I was selecting a switched supply and connecting to the fused side I used a DMM to check the voltages, with and without the fuse in place, before I made any permanent connections. You could use a 12v LED (one of those go faster coloured lights beloved of boy racers) to check the supplies if you haven't got a meter. You'd also need to make sure that the TOMTOM current drain isn't too high such that it loads the particular circuit you use; I'd be surprised if it is, but it's worth making sure.

I was going to ask the same a few weeks ago and then i was going to feed the cable through the centre airvent and mount the tomtom on the vents so as to leave the windscreen mark free. When i looked at the tomtom cigarette lighter adapter it states that it is 12v in and only 5v 2amp out.If i wired it straight to the wires in the dash surely that would blow the tomtom as you are putting 12v into a 5v system.

I'm fitting the Brodit Active Holder Tilt Swivel for TomTom GO920 T from Brodit: Thanks for the replies- still looking for the definitive answer as to whether there is an accessory power point ready to go inside the dash. Thinking about scotch blocking into the power lead of a bluetooth handsfree kit at the moment- we shall see :)
