I've heard, in general, that the MIDI setup in Protools is lacking and that I should use some other package in conjunction with PT. Since I paid 3 arms and 4 legs for this TDM system, I would like to see it work. I also use DP3 and Logic Audio. What is the general concensus? Thanks in advance.

I only use the Midi in PT for sync'ing my other mac w/ Reason/Logic/Vision DSP via Midi Time Code, and/or using Midi Beat Clock to send tempo and program changes to my FX units. other than that.....nothing! sdf
Do not get me wrong, i LOVE PTLE!! Its so great tracking and mixing, even mastering on the great piece of software. The midi side....well, my main problems: 1. no midi drum map 2. no overdub option 3. the timing sux!! triggering a module with a controller, the latency is awful 4. even when i copy paste in gridmode, the beats start to drag, on pads its no big deal but on drums or bass synth..no!! i prefer Reason to do all my midi sequencing! great sounds too. sdf

But we do have overdub (merge). I also LOVE my PT001 but being limited to the PC plug-in catalog sucks. Question S.D. - can I use a module with a reason?
Do your midi in Logic or DP. Export it as standard midifile. Import into PT session. All tracks will come in including tempo maps..etc. Reassasign your patches. Then..do the little tweaks in PT...thats about all its good for. It helps to name your midi tracks using the patch name or number while your in Logic. That makes it easier to assign your patches when you import it. This method avoids all the problems trying to sync the 2 apps together..as well as..the limited tools..and clumsy tempo editior in PT midi. dcornutt
I am not a big midi person, but i CAN say that i've fiddled with Cakewalk, and it never made any sense to me, and never did what i wanted it to do. When i began using Pro Tools, i couldn't believe how intuitive everything was. Suddenly midi made sense. I haven't used anything else other than Cakewalk though, so I can't really compare them all, but I am really really happy with protools. - kip

Now now .... lets be nice. We don't which version of PT he is on. I recall that PT5... the first to get midi was a bit fickle with the mid merge and may not have had multiple input devices. So difficulty with overdub could have something to do with that. Doesn't hurt to be stupid sometimes. I do it often!!!
